Tampa tarpon fishing- FWC Historic tarpon photo galleryTarpon fishing first gained popularity after the Civil War with the invention of the knuckle buster reel. Homosassa and Boca Grande opened tarpon lodges attracting rich folks from up North, as well as on the other side of the big pond. Soon the word of monster tarpon spread faster than cholera and it wasn't long before wealthy sport fisherman became infected with "tarpon fever!" Today, there still remains no cure for tarpon fever and the only treatment is salt air, sunshine and a bent rod.  Prime tarpon fishing in

Tampa Bay begins in May and continues through the end of July. In Boca Grande the season begins a little earlier and ends a little sooner- from April through June. Tarpon fishing in either place is usually productive till around October. Tarpon are caught year round in both Tampa Bay and Boca Grande. However, most tarpon hook-ups during the winter season are by-catches and not often targetedUndisputedly the best time for multiple tarpon hook-ups is during June and July's crab chews. The Crab Chew is a natural phenomenon that occurs every year in Boca Grande Pass and Tampa Bay. It only happens on a hill tide (and up to 4 days before and for days after) during full and new moon phases. The crab chew occurs on the out going tide. Pass and blue crabs are drawn to the top of the water by the magical lure of the moon. The crabs are then swept out through the bay and passes by the strong out going currents of the hill tide. As thousands of crabs funnel through the passes they spark insane feeding frenzies among hungry pods of poons awaiting an easy meal! It is not uncommon to jump 10 to 20 or more tarpon during a good crab chew; fish the hill tides and you won't be disapointed!

River fishing for juvenile and resident tarpon kicks off around August. Juvenile tarpon typically weigh from 5-50lbs and offer some of the best aerial acrobatics any angler could ever ask for.  Resident tarpon are often adult size tarpon which make the river their winter home. Aside from differences in coloring (adopt a gold-bronze color from the river's tannic waters) these river brutes are as much a blast as they are a challenge to catch as migratory tarpon.
